Deonta Vaughn made two free throws with 5.9 seconds left, then made the game-saving strip just before the buzzer as Cincinnati beat Louisville 69-66 last night in the second round of the Big East tournament in New York.

The 11th-seeded Bearcats (18-14), who had never won a game in the tournament until Tuesday's opening-round win over Rutgers, advanced to the quarterfinals against third-seeded West Virginia.

Edgar Sosa had 28 points for the defending champion Cardinals (20-12), but he was stripped of the ball by Vaughn as he headed toward a possible tying three-point attempt.

Yancy Gates had 16 points for Cincinnati, which finished with a 54-33 rebound advantage, including 28-9 on the offensive end. Vaughn had 10 points.

Reginald Delk hit a three-pointer with 9.7 seconds left to bring Louisville within 67-66 before Vaughn's free throws made it a three-point game.

Men's highlights

No.22 Georgetown 69, South Florida 49 - Jason Clark and Greg Monroe scored 16 points each and Georgetown built a big first-half lead before handling everything South Florida star Dominique Jones could offer in the Big East tournament.

Chris Wright also had 15 points for the eighth-seeded Hoyas (21-9), who will play No.1 seed Syracuse today.

Georgetown built a 14-point first-half lead relying mostly on defense. South Florida (20-12) didn't score for nearly eight minutes.

Jones finished with 21 points, but he didn't get much help from his teammates. Over an 18-minute stretch spanning both halves, Jones either scored or had an assist on each of his team's field goals.

Notre Dame 68, Seton Hall 56 - Luke Harangody had 20 points and 10 rebounds in a healthy performance off the bench, and Notre Dame (22-10) strengthened its NCAA case by shutting down Seton Hall (19-12) in the Big East tournament.

Notre Dame, riding a five-game winning streak, plays second-seeded Pittsburgh in a quarterfinal tonight.

Harangody, the nation's second-leading scorer, missed five games because of a bruised right knee before returning to play 11 minutes Saturday at Marquette. But he looked more like himself last night.

Nebraska 75, Missouri 60 - Brandon Richardson scored 19 points and Nebraska took command with an early 16-1 run as it shocked No.5 seed Missouri in an opening-round game at the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

The Cornhuskers (15-17), who were 2-14 in Big 12 regular-season games, outrebounded, outshot and outhustled a team that had easily defeated them twice this year.

Laurence Bowers had 11 points for Missouri (22-10), the defending Big 12 tournament champion.

Prochaska top MAC player

Jonathan Alder graduate Lauren Prochaska was named the Mid-American Conference women's basketball player of the year for a second straight season.

Prochaska, a 5-foot-11 junior, led Bowling Green in points (17.6 average) and rebounds (5.7), as the Falcons won a sixth straight MAC regular-season championship. She became only the sixth women's player in MAC history to win the honor more than once.

Prochaska was a two-time Division III co-Player of the Year while in high school. She led Alder to a state championship in 2006.
