Maurice Clarett, the infamous star running back turned convict, started classes today on the first day of OSU's second summer session.
He was hoping for a low-key return, but no such luck. Once word got out that Clarett was back, the school's media-relations office was swamped with calls, and ended up releasing a statement from Clarett:
"This is a surreal feeling to be back at Ohio State in such a supportive environment," he said. "I have looked forward to being back in school and I'm doing my best to fit in with other students. I don't want to be a distraction or nuisance to the football team or to students on campus.-
Clarett served about 3 1/2 years of a 7 1/2-year prison sentence for robbery and weapons charges. In April, a judge granted him early release and sent him to a Columbus halfway-house to serve another four to six months. Inmates there are sometimes allowed to leave the facility for jobs or school.
Anyone who follows OSU football knows Clarett's long saga, starting with his key role in propelling the Buckeyes to the 2002 national championship and ending with his September 2006 conviction and sentencing.
Clarett is 26 years old. And no, he has no football eligibility remaining. Once a player begins his collegiate career, he has five years of eligibility. Clarett's window ran out after the 2006 season.
